VDS_E_INVALID_PROVIDER_NAME
VDS_E_INVALID_PROVIDER_NAME concerns the descriptive provider name exposed through VDS_PROVIDER_PROP. Although the name is not the provider identity, VDS still requires valid metadata so administrators can distinguish software and hardware providers.
Repair metadata without changing identity
- Provide a nonempty, correctly terminated Unicode name.
- Preserve the existing provider ID and CLSID while correcting the display name.
- Check packaging or registry expansion that may have produced an empty or malformed string.
Do not generate a new provider GUID merely because the display name is invalid. That would create a different logical provider and can orphan cached references. Also avoid using the name as a unique key; names are descriptive, while provider IDs carry identity.
