VDS_E_VOLUME_SIMPLE_SPANNED

This code is the inverse of a generic “mirrored volume not supported” check: the operation is defined only for simple or spanned topology. VDS documents that simple and spanned volumes have one plex and one member, while striped and RAID-5 volumes use multiple columns and mirrored volumes use multiple plexes. The topology determines whether an operation can preserve layout semantics.

Why this state matters

Requery the volume type before retrying. If the volume is striped, RAID-5, or mirrored, changing a parameter will not make the same method valid. The management workflow must select an operation that explicitly supports that volume type or intentionally transform the topology through supported VDS interfaces. Never infer simple/spanned state from the number of drive letters or visible file-system volumes.
