VDS_E_PARTITION_LDM
Dynamic disks use LDM-managed regions rather than the ordinary one-partition-to-one-volume model. Microsoft documents that dynamic GPT disks have an LDM partition and that dynamic providers generally do not map volumes directly to partitions. IVdsAdvancedDisk allows only limited operations on dynamic disks because partition configuration is owned by the volume manager.
Why this state matters
Identify the disk as basic or dynamic and classify the target extent before changing anything. An LDM partition is not free space and is not an ordinary basic-data partition. Deleting or retyping it outside the dynamic-disk workflow can destroy pack/volume configuration. Use pack, volume, and plex interfaces for dynamic topology rather than partition-level manipulation.
Diagnostic focus
- Confirm whether the disk is dynamic and whether the target extent is LDM metadata/data.
- Inspect pack, volume, and plex topology before any destructive disk-layout action.
- Do not treat an LDM partition with no drive letter as unused space.
- Use VDS dynamic-volume interfaces instead of basic partition operations for managed topology.
