What does HRESULT 0x80042914 (VDS_E_NTFS_FORMAT_NOT_SUPPORTED) mean?

VDS_E_NTFS_FORMAT_NOT_SUPPORTED

VDS can query the file systems supported for formatting a particular volume. IVdsVolumeMF2::QueryFileSystemFormatSupport returns an array of VDS_FILE_SYSTEM_FORMAT_SUPPORT_PROP structures, including the file-system name, revision, default allocation-unit size, allowed allocation sizes, and capability flags. This HRESULT means NTFS is not supported for this volume in the current VDS/provider context.

Why this state matters

Do not assume every writable block device can be formatted as NTFS through every VDS path. The correct diagnostic is to query the advertised format support before constructing the FormatEx/FormatEx2 request. If NTFS is absent, investigate media type, provider limitations, partition/volume object type, and operating-system support rather than repeatedly changing the label or quick-format flag.
