What does HRESULT 0x80042919 (VDS_E_VDISK_NOT_OPEN) mean?

VDS_E_VDISK_NOT_OPEN

This HRESULT belongs to the VDS virtual-disk object lifecycle. An IVdsVDisk object can exist in the service object list before its backing virtual-disk file has been opened. IVdsVDisk::Open creates the opened-handle representation and returns IVdsOpenVDisk, which exposes attach, detach, compact, merge, and expand operations.

Why this state matters

The important distinction is between discovering a VDS object and opening the virtual disk for an operation. VDS_VDISK_PROPERTIES.State reports the lifecycle state. In the published VDS model, an added object transitions to VDS_VST_OPEN only after Open succeeds. Re-enumerating the object does not substitute for that open step.
