What does HRESULT 0x8004291C (VDS_E_INVALID_ISCSI_PATH) mean?

VDS_E_INVALID_ISCSI_PATH

This is the iSCSI-specific structural path error. For an iSCSI path, VDS_PATH_INFO uses a target portal ID, an initiator adapter ID, and a pointer to VDS_IPADDRESS for the initiator portal address. The published HRESULT definition identifies either an incorrect path type or a null initiator-portal properties pointer.

Why this state matters

The code is therefore more precise than a failed iSCSI login. VDS is rejecting provider-supplied path metadata before the path can be treated as a valid endpoint description. A target can still be logged in through another session or portal while one provider-returned path object is malformed.
