VDS_E_SHRINK_UNKNOWN_FILESYSTEM
VDS_E_SHRINK_UNKNOWN_FILESYSTEM This HRESULT is the shrink-side counterpart to an unrecognized file system. Shrinking is more than reducing a VDS extent boundary: the file system must first relocate or account for data so the released tail region is safe to remove. IVdsVolumeShrink::Shrink explicitly coordinates shrinking the file system and the volume.
What the VDS state means
Microsoft documents additional shrink constraints: immovable files can reduce the reclaimable range, the estimated maximum can exceed what is actually available, and VDS shrink/extend support is limited to documented file-system cases. If the file system is unknown, VDS cannot perform the required file-system phase and should not simply truncate the volume.
Diagnostic focus
- Identify the file system from authoritative volume/file-system properties rather than a mount-point label or application configuration.
- Do not use a raw partition-size reduction as a workaround; shrinking the outer storage boundary without file-system coordination can overwrite live data.
- If the file system becomes recognizable after repairing an independent file-system problem, query the maximum reclaimable bytes again before retrying.
- When using the async shrink interface, inspect the final operation HRESULT and reacquire volume properties after any failure because shrink state may have changed.
