WININET_E_TIMEOUT
WININET_E_TIMEOUT is the HRESULT form of the WinINet timeout error. It means that the request did not complete before the timeout configured for the operation; it does not by itself identify whether the delay was in name resolution, proxy discovery, the TCP connection, TLS negotiation, sending, or receiving the response.
Useful diagnostics
- Record the URL, proxy mode, elapsed time, and the last WinINet status callback before the failure.
- Separate connection, send, and receive time limits instead of treating all timeouts as a server-response delay.
- For a retry, use an idempotent request policy and create a fresh request when the previous handle may contain partial state.
Do not hide a persistent timeout
Repeated retries can mask a routing, proxy, TLS, or origin-server problem. Compare a direct connection with the configured proxy path before increasing every timeout globally.
