SPAPI_E_INVALID_DEVINST_NAME
SPAPI_E_INVALID_DEVINST_NAME means that the device instance name supplied to SetupAPI is not a valid Plug and Play device instance ID. A device instance ID is assigned by the PnP manager and identifies a particular devnode, so it must not be substituted with a friendly name or arbitrary hardware label.
What to check
- Retrieve the instance ID from SetupAPI or Configuration Manager instead of composing it from display text.
- Check encoding, string termination, and any path or escaping transformation performed before the API call.
- Confirm that the code did not pass a hardware ID, interface path, or container ID in place of a device instance ID.
