SCARD_E_CARD_UNSUPPORTED The inserted smart card does not meet the minimum requirements expected by the Windows smart-card stack or by the application using it. This is about card compatibility, not merely whether the reader is detected.
What to verify
- Capture the ATR and current protocol with
SCardStatus, then compare the card with the reader, minidriver, and middleware support matrix. - Check whether Windows paired a suitable minidriver when the card was inserted; Plug and Play uses card identity data to search for one.
- Test the same card with a supported reader and the same reader with a known supported card before changing authentication policy.
