COMADMIN_E_RECYCLEDPROCESSMAYNOTBEPAUSED
Invalid pause request during process recycling: exact meaning of COMADMIN_E_RECYCLEDPROCESSMAYNOTBEPAUSED
COM+ refused to pause an application process because that instance has already been recycled or is in the recycle transition. New work may already be routed to a replacement process while the old instance drains references.
The Windows SDK describes the condition as “A recycled process may not be paused.”
Where the result occurs
The pause request targets a lifecycle generation that is no longer the active normal-running process. State must be refreshed before deciding whether the old draining process or the replacement should be controlled.
Typical cause branches
- a pause command races with automatic or manual recycling.
- automation reuses an old application-instance GUID after recycle began.
- an operator attempts to freeze the retiring process instead of the replacement.
- tracking data was sampled before the state transition and applied afterward.
Evidence to collect before changing the catalog
- old and replacement instance IDs/PIDs, AppID, and recycle start time.
- pause request target, caller, and command timestamp.
- COM+ tracking/events for routing handoff and old-process drain.
- reason for pausing and whether it applies to old in-flight work or new activations.
Diagnostic sequence
- query current application instances and identify which generation is active.
- Do not assume the old PID still represents the application.
- allow the retiring process to drain unless incident response requires separate OS-level capture.
- pause the replacement only when the operational goal explicitly concerns new work.
- serialize lifecycle controllers to prevent pause/recycle races.
Retry and recovery
Retry only after selecting a current non-recycled instance. Reissuing pause against the retired identifier cannot succeed.
What this HRESULT does not establish
The HRESULT does not prove that the replacement is running correctly or that the old process is hung. Inspect both generations and their routing state.
Difference from nearby COMADMIN results
COMADMIN_E_PAUSEDPROCESSMAYNOTBERECYCLED starts from a paused process and rejects recycle; COMADMIN_E_PROCESSALREADYRECYCLED reports duplicate recycle. This value rejects pause after recycle.
Practical administration scenario
A deployment recycle begins, and a monitoring action based on a stale PID immediately attempts to pause the old Dllhost process.
Developer and operations guidance
Record old/new instance IDs and PIDs, recycle reason/timing, pause target, caller, current routing generation, and drain status.
