HTTP_E_STATUS_BAD_GATEWAY represents HTTP 502 Bad Gateway. A server acting as a gateway or proxy could not obtain a valid response from the upstream server it contacted for the request.

What to identify

Which component returned the 502: reverse proxy, load balancer, CDN edge, application gateway, or another intermediary.
The upstream host and request selected by that gateway, including the correlation/request ID if one is available.
Whether the upstream connection failed, closed unexpectedly, timed out at a different layer, or returned data the gateway could not parse.

Client-side versus server-side action

If you are only the client, preserve the URL, time, response headers, and request ID; the actionable failure is usually at the gateway/upstream boundary. If you operate the service, correlate the gateway log with the upstream application or server log before changing unrelated client settings.

Verification

Repeat the same request after correcting the upstream or gateway condition and verify that the gateway receives a valid upstream response. Do not confuse a 502 with a local default-gateway or router problem solely because both use the word “gateway.”
