Interpretation without overreach
The expression uses an unsupported function. The operation reached expression compilation after the call syntax and function token have been recognized. The first branch to test is whether metadata was authored for a newer or different SMI implementation; keep that separate from the possibility that a generic expression language function was assumed to exist.

When another attempt is justified
Retry after rewriting the expression or selecting a compatible target. The engine cannot dynamically acquire an unsupported function.

A manifest generator uses a helper function supported by its own rule engine. SMI recognizes the function call syntax but has no implementation for that function.

Preserve a redacted summary of whether a supported equivalent can express the same rule; use a cryptographic hash when that evidence is a file, stream, or generated artifact.
