WU_E_AU_CALL_CANCELLED
WU_E_AU_CALL_CANCELLED means Automatic Updates stopped the request because the target update is no longer applicable. This may happen when update state changes between detection and action.
What to do
- Start a fresh scan and work from the current set of applicable updates.
- Check for a superseding package, a completed prerequisite, or a changed system configuration.
- In managed deployments, avoid holding an update selection for a long time before installation.
Applicability can change after detection
Windows Update selection is not a permanent promise that the same revision will remain installable. The protocol synchronizes update metadata and WUA evaluates applicability against the current device state; a prerequisite, superseding revision, driver match, or other detection input can change between a scan and a later Automatic Updates action. That is why this status should be handled by obtaining a current search result rather than forcing the stale update object through installation.
For automation, log the update identity and revision from the cancelled operation, then compare them with a new search. If the update disappears from the applicable set, the cancellation is consistent with changed detection state; if it remains applicable, the surrounding Windows Update events are needed to identify why Automatic Updates abandoned the call.
