TPM_E_INVALID_KEYHANDLE
TPM_E_INVALID_KEYHANDLE means the TPM 1.2 command supplied a key-handle value that cannot be interpreted as a usable key handle. The failure is at handle interpretation: it occurs before a successful key operation or authorization check can proceed.
Differentiate it from TPM_E_KEYNOTFOUND. A key-not-found result implies a handle selected an invalid or unavailable key; an invalid-key-handle result indicates that the handle itself is not valid in the expected key-handle context.
How to investigate
- Trace the handle’s origin: a freshly loaded transient key, a context restored from storage, or a value supplied by a different process.
- Verify resource lifetime. TPM 1.2 keys can be unloaded, evicted, or made invalid by ownership or state changes.
- Keep handles scoped to the TPM instance that created them; do not serialize an opaque handle as if it were portable key material.
