DWRITE_E_DOWNLOADFAILED means that a remote-font download reached a failure state. The error is part of DirectWrite’s asynchronous font-delivery path, so the useful evidence lies in the download callback and the resource that was requested rather than in a later generic layout failure.
What to capture
- The remote-font source, requested subset, queue state, completion callback result, and any transport or cache error exposed by the loader.
- Whether the failure is isolated to one font, one network path, one user profile, or every remote-font request.
- The fallback font chosen by the application, so visually changed output can be correlated with the download event.
Correct response
Surface a controlled fallback or postpone optional text rendering. Do not mark a font as permanently available after a failed request; a later operation must consult current download state and must not assume that an earlier remote reference produced usable local data.
