STATUS_OPEN_FAILED
An internal redirector create operation failed before final error mapping
The public message explicitly identifies this as a LAN Manager Redirector placeholder used while mapping an internal NtCreateFile failure. It should normally be replaced by a more specific status before an application sees the result.
If it escapes to logs or callers, preserve the underlying create request and the earlier status in the trace. The placeholder alone cannot distinguish name resolution, authentication, DFS referral, share type, or server-side file errors. Retrying without the original failure loses the diagnostic value.
What to inspect
- Capture the first NtCreateFile or SMB create failure before error translation.
- Record path, desired access, share mode, create disposition, and server response.
- Treat repeated exposure of the placeholder as a redirector or compatibility-layer defect.
