STATUS_JOURNAL_ENTRY_DELETED
The USN cursor points before retained journal history
This status means the caller is asking for journal records that have been trimmed or deleted. The journal itself can still be active, but the requested starting point is no longer available.
For sync and backup systems, this is a loss-of-incremental-history condition. The safe response is to rebuild state or perform a wider reconciliation rather than pretending no changes occurred.
What to inspect
- Compare the saved USN with the journal first USN.
- Perform a full scan or provider-specific repair of the index.
- Persist journal ID together with the USN cursor to detect journal recreation.
