STATUS_NETWORK_SESSION_EXPIRED

STATUS_NETWORK_SESSION_EXPIRED identifies an expired logical SMB session, not merely a dropped TCP connection. The SMB2 specification explicitly treats an expired session as requiring the session-setup path to reauthenticate before the client can continue using remote resources.

How to narrow it down

Do not reuse old session assumptions after this status. Record the session identifier, dialect, authentication method, ticket or credential lifetime, reconnect history and whether the failure occurred in a compound request. Reauthentication can establish a new valid session, but handles, tree connections and outstanding requests must be evaluated according to the protocol and application state.

For a service, distinguish credential-expiry behavior from transient connectivity. Repeated session expiry at a fixed interval often points to an identity or session-lifetime policy, not a noisy network.
