STATUS_BEYOND_VDL
The request crosses beyond the file valid data length
Valid data length is the portion of a file that contains initialized data. A file can have an end-of-file value that is larger than its valid data length, especially after allocation or sparse/fast extension operations.
This status means the request ran into that initialized-data boundary. It is a file-layout and security boundary because bytes beyond VDL must not expose stale disk contents.
What to inspect
- Compare allocation size, end-of-file and valid data length.
- Check whether SetFileValidData or sparse-file logic is involved.
- Zero or write the required range before expecting normal reads beyond VDL.
