STATUS_DEVICE_HARDWARE_ERROR
The hardware cannot complete the request safely
A fatal device error is stronger than an unsupported feature or transient busy state. The controller, firmware or platform has concluded that the hardware condition prevents reliable completion. Supporting evidence can appear in device telemetry, WHEA records, bus error logs or class-specific status.
Preserve health and error records before power cycling or replacing the device. For storage and persistent-memory hardware, protect data first and avoid stress tests that write to the failing unit. A driver update can improve interpretation or recovery, but it cannot repair confirmed physical failure.
What to inspect
- Collect device health telemetry, firmware logs, WHEA records and bus status.
- Identify whether the failure follows the device, slot, cable, power source or workload.
- Protect data and follow vendor diagnostics before destructive reset or firmware update.
