STATUS_FILE_SYSTEM_VIRTUALIZATION_PROVIDER_UNKNOWN
The virtualization root is registered for an unknown provider
A valid projected namespace must be associated with the provider implementation that understands its backing store and item identities. This status means the platform cannot resolve the provider identity recorded for the virtualization root. The files under the root cannot simply be handed to an arbitrary different provider.
The condition can follow incomplete product removal, restoration of a root without its provider installation, registration mismatch, or movement of metadata between systems. Installing a similarly named application is not sufficient unless it uses the same provider identity and supports the existing root format.
What to inspect
- Capture the provider or instance identity stored for the root and compare it with the installed provider registration.
- Check product installation, upgrade, rollback, and uninstall logs for registration changes.
- Determine whether the root was restored from another computer or an incompatible provider version.
- Use the owning product recovery workflow to re-register, migrate, or recreate the root.
