What does NTSTATUS 0xC002001C (RPC_NT_CALL_FAILED_DNE) mean?

RPC_NT_CALL_FAILED_DNE

RPC_NT_CALL_FAILED_DNE is an NTSTATUS value used by the Windows RPC runtime. This status means the RPC call failed but execution on the server did not start. The server was reachable at some point, yet the failure occurred before the requested procedure began running. That makes it materially different from an ambiguous post-dispatch failure.

Compare it with RPC_NT_CALL_FAILED, where the server procedure may have started and side effects may need reconciliation. It also differs from RPC_NT_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE, which does not provide the same reachability/execution boundary.

The call failed before the server began executing the procedure
