What does NTSTATUS 0xC0020022 (RPC_NT_INVALID_TAG) mean?

Previous Next
RPC_NT_UNSUPPORTED_TYPE RPC_NT_INVALID_BOUND

RPC_NT_INVALID_TAG

The RPC runtime rejected an invalid discriminant tag

This status is tied to NDR marshalling and discriminated data. A tag or discriminant selected by the client, server, or stub does not match the valid cases expected by the generated RPC code.

Diagnose the IDL contract and the actual wire data together. A bad tag often means version skew, corrupted stub data, or a caller that supplied a union discriminator outside the values the server supports.

What to inspect

  • Compare client and server IDL definitions and generated stubs.
  • Inspect the union or switch discriminant value on the failing call.
  • Do not treat this as a transport failure if the RPC packet reached the stub.
