STATUS_CTX_WINSTATION_NAME_INVALID
The request used the wrong kind of session identifier
STATUS_CTX_WINSTATION_NAME_INVALID concerns the Remote Desktop Services session namespace, historically called a WinStation. It does not identify a failed DNS lookup or an unreachable computer. The server rejected the session name supplied to a session-management operation before it could act on a session.
Modern Remote Desktop Services APIs expose a numeric session ID together with session information. A user name, an RD Session Host name, a listener name, and a session name are different identifiers; substituting one for another can make an otherwise valid management request target nothing useful.
Useful evidence
- Enumerate sessions on the intended RD Session Host and record the numeric session ID, session state, user, and server before issuing the follow-up operation.
- Record the exact caller API or command and the identifier it accepted. This status is most useful when it identifies an application that constructed a session name instead of reading the current session list.
- If a connection broker or gateway is in front of the host, confirm that the session-management request is sent to the host that actually owns the session.
