MF_E_INVALIDSTREAMNUMBER means that an input or output stream ID was not recognized. A stream identifier is not always the same as an ordinal position in an enumeration.

Use the transform's IDs

Call GetStreamCount and, where supported, GetStreamIDs before caching IDs.
If GetStreamIDs returns E_NOTIMPL, fixed stream IDs are consecutive and start at zero.
Refresh cached IDs after a dynamic stream change, because an MFT can change its output-stream layout.

Log both the attempted ID and the current list of stream IDs; this quickly separates a caller-side mapping bug from a renegotiation event.
