MF_E_NO_AUDIO_RECORDING_DEVICE

MF_E_NO_AUDIO_RECORDING_DEVICE is a capture-device selection failure. Media Foundation represents an audio capture device as a media source, while the actual audio endpoint is supplied through WASAPI. This error should therefore be investigated before codec or sample processing begins.

Verify device enumeration and the selected endpoint

Enumerate audio capture devices with MF_DEVSOURCE_ATTRIBUTE_SOURCE_TYPE_AUDCAP_GUID and record the number of IMFActivate objects returned.
Keep the endpoint ID from MF_DEVSOURCE_ATTRIBUTE_SOURCE_TYPE_AUDCAP_ENDPOINT_ID in logs. A friendly name is suitable for display but is not guaranteed to be unique.
If MFCreateDeviceSource selects by role, record the role. With neither endpoint ID nor role specified, Media Foundation selects the default capture device for eCommunications.

A zero-device result, an obsolete stored endpoint ID, and a changed default communications device are different cases. Reinstalling a decoder cannot create an audio capture endpoint. Re-enumerate the capture devices and compare the endpoint ID or role that the application actually requested.
