STATUS_COMPRESSION_NOT_ALLOWED_IN_TRANSACTION
Compression metadata cannot be changed in the active transaction
STATUS_COMPRESSION_NOT_ALLOWED_IN_TRANSACTION means the requested NTFS compression operation cannot be performed while a transaction is active on the file. Compression changes file allocation and metadata state, which TxF does not allow in this context.
This can be triggered directly by code calling compression controls, or indirectly by utilities that compress files while another component is doing transacted writes.
What to check
- Calls to set or clear NTFS compression through the transacted handle or same file.
- Background compression policies, installers, or cleanup utilities running concurrently.
- Whether all transacted handles are closed before compression changes are attempted.
- Whether compression can be applied before the transaction or after it commits.
Useful distinction
This status is specific to the active transaction. It does not necessarily mean the file system lacks compression support or the file can never be compressed.
