ERROR_GRAPHICS_OPM_INVALID_HANDLE
An OPM output object is no longer a valid target
An OPM handle identifies a particular video output and session, not a permanent monitor name. It can become stale when a monitor is unplugged, a display path is reconfigured, the graphics stack resets, or the application has already released and recreated the associated object.
Do not diagnose this as an HDCP capability result. The immediate question is object lifetime: which IOPMVideoOutput instance produced the handle, whether its initialization completed, and whether a display or session transition happened before the failing call. A cached handle must never be shared across independently created OPM outputs.
Recovery discipline
- Invalidate cached per-output state when display topology, adapter, session, or device state changes.
- Re-enumerate outputs for the current monitor or Direct3D target, then perform a new OPM handshake for the new object.
- Keep the failure separate from
ERROR_GRAPHICS_OPM_VIDEO_OUTPUT_NO_LONGER_EXISTS: that status explains why Windows destroyed an output; this one reports that the supplied handle cannot be used.
