ERROR_HV_INVALID_PORT_ID
A connection can survive after its destination stops being usable
In Hyper-V inter-partition communication, a port belongs to the receiving side and determines the target virtual processor, synthetic interrupt source and delivery type. The TLFS documents HV_STATUS_INVALID_PORT_ID when the connection's port has been deleted, the port owner is not active, or the operation does not match the port type, such as attempting to post a message to a non-message port.
This distinction matters because the sender-side connection may still be present. Recreating only the local handle can leave a channel bound to an unusable destination object.
Useful checks
- Confirm that the receiver's port still exists and that its owning partition is active.
- Verify whether the port was created for messages or event flags before selecting
HvCallPostMessageorHvCallSignalEvent. - Coordinate shutdown: delete or invalidate sender-side connections when the receiving port is removed.
- Record the destination port type, target VP policy and SINT configuration alongside the connection ID.
