ERROR_HV_FEATURE_UNAVAILABLE
Hypervisor presence does not imply every Hyper-V feature is usable
ERROR_HV_FEATURE_UNAVAILABLE means the requested facility exists in the interface family but is unavailable to this caller. The reason can be missing hardware support, an older hypervisor implementation, architecture differences, a partition privilege mask, or a feature intentionally hidden from a guest.
Use Hyper-V feature discovery and relevant synthetic registers before invoking optional hypercalls. Log the host build, guest architecture, partition privileges, and advertised capability bits. Enabling a similarly named Windows feature or changing an application setting cannot supply a capability that the hypervisor does not expose; choose a documented fallback or reject that configuration explicitly.
Capability evidence to retain
- Feature-discovery leaves or capability registers read by the caller.
- Host build, processor architecture, and virtualization mode.
- Partition privilege flags and whether the caller is root or guest.
- Fallback path selected when the feature is absent.
