ERROR_VMCOMPUTE_TIMEOUT
The timeout belongs to the compute-service control path
ERROR_VMCOMPUTE_TIMEOUT indicates that HCS did not receive the expected response from the virtual machine hosting the container within the allowed interval. It does not by itself prove packet loss on the container’s external network.
The timed-out request may be startup, shutdown, property retrieval, process creation or another guest-compute operation. Increasing every timeout can conceal a hung utility VM, blocked guest service, storage stall or lifecycle deadlock while making recovery slower.
Evidence and corrective action
- Log the exact HCS operation type and compute-system identifier associated with the deadline.
- Determine whether the utility VM remains responsive to other control operations.
- Correlate the wait with host storage latency, memory pressure and guest boot/service events.
- Use operation callbacks or result retrieval to detect a late completion after the caller’s own timeout.
- Avoid submitting a conflicting replacement operation until the state of the original request is known.
