STATUS_VOLMGR_EXTENT_ALREADY_USED
STATUS_VOLMGR_EXTENT_ALREADY_USED means that the proposed byte range is already assigned to another volume. This is a range-ownership conflict, not a generic shortage of free capacity and not proof that the other volume is mounted.
For a safe diagnosis, compare extents as ranges on the same physical-disk identity: start offset plus length. A gap in a graphical view can still be unavailable because it is reserved, already claimed by a dynamic-volume component, or represented by stale inventory data.
What to compare
- Enumerate all extents on the target disk, including volumes without drive letters and offline or hidden volumes.
- Compare byte ranges, not partition numbers copied from another disk.
- Stop concurrent provisioning or recovery jobs before retrying; a second writer can make a previously free range unavailable.
