STATUS_VOLMGR_NUMBER_OF_DISKS_INVALID
The requested layout contains an unacceptable number of disks
STATUS_VOLMGR_NUMBER_OF_DISKS_INVALID rejects the disk count in a volume-management request. The status does not identify a failed disk; it says the proposed topology itself has an invalid cardinality.
Legal disk counts depend on the requested layout. A simple volume, a striped volume, a mirror, and a striped-with-parity volume have different structural requirements, so a count that is meaningful for one type can be impossible for another.
Capture the requested volume type and the complete disk list before retrying. If the request was assembled from an enumeration, confirm that missing/offline disks were not silently filtered after the count field was calculated, and check that duplicate disk entries are not inflating the list.
What to inspect
- Compare the declared disk count with the actual number of disk specifications supplied by the caller.
- Validate the count against the intended volume type instead of applying one hard-coded rule to every layout.
- Rebuild the request from a fresh disk enumeration if storage membership changed during the management operation.
