STATUS_VHD_DRIVE_FOOTER_CORRUPT
STATUS_VHD_DRIVE_FOOTER_CORRUPT reports a footer-level validity problem in a legacy VHD. The footer contains information such as disk type, virtual size and a unique identifier, so a provider cannot safely interpret the rest of the image when those fields are inconsistent with the format rules.
The important distinction from STATUS_VHD_DRIVE_FOOTER_CHECKSUM_MISMATCH is that this is not limited to the checksum check. It also differs from STATUS_VHD_INVALID_FILE_SIZE, which concerns the container length rather than the footer record itself.
Diagnose at the container layer
- Capture the footer bytes, image size, and reported disk type before invoking a conversion or attach operation.
- Verify that the selected recovery tool understands legacy VHD rather than treating the file as an unstructured raw disk image.
- Do not repair guest partitions first: the virtual-disk provider must be able to establish a trustworthy container mapping before guest-level tools are meaningful.
