STATUS_VHD_FORMAT_UNSUPPORTED_VERSION
STATUS_VHD_FORMAT_UNSUPPORTED_VERSION is a compatibility result: the provider recognized a virtual-disk format but cannot safely process the version declared by that file. It is not the same as failing to recognize any VHD-like structure at all.
Compare it with STATUS_VHD_FORMAT_UNKNOWN: unknown means no accepted format identity was found, while unsupported version means an identity was found but the opening component lacks support for that revision. It is also different from a corrupt-header result, which points to invalid bytes rather than a supportedness boundary.
Compatibility questions to answer
- Record the host Windows version, Hyper-V role version and the exact tool or API that opened the image.
- Determine whether the file was created by a newer platform, converted from another product, or copied from a system with a different virtual-disk provider.
- Prefer opening the image with a compatible platform in read-only mode or restoring from a compatible backup over altering version fields manually.
