STATUS_VHD_SPARSE_HEADER_CORRUPT
STATUS_VHD_SPARSE_HEADER_CORRUPT means the legacy dynamic or differencing header cannot be trusted as a sparse-layout description. This header directs the provider to structures such as the block allocation table and can carry parent identity and locator information for a differencing disk.
Unlike STATUS_VHD_SPARSE_HEADER_CHECKSUM_MISMATCH, this status is not limited to the checksum field. Unlike STATUS_VHD_PARENT_VHD_NOT_FOUND, it may prevent the provider from even deriving a trustworthy parent location from the child header.
Separate structure recovery from chain recovery
- Capture the header and table offsets from a read-only copy, together with the exact file size and any available footer copy.
- Keep candidate parent disks untouched until the child header has been validated against the legacy format rules.
- Do not use a merge operation as a generic repair tool; a merge assumes a valid, acyclic chain and a readable mapping.
