ERROR_VHD_BLOCK_ALLOCATION_FAILURE
ERROR_VHD_BLOCK_ALLOCATION_FAILURE means Windows could not allocate a new physical block while writing to a dynamic or differencing virtual disk. The immediate cause is usually on the host storage path rather than inside the guest.
What to check
- Check free capacity, quotas, thin-provisioning limits, and storage alerts on the host volume that stores the VHD/VHDX.
- Check whether a checkpoint chain or rapidly growing dynamic disk exhausted available host space.
- Review host event logs and the underlying storage subsystem for I/O failures before retrying writes.
