ERROR_VHD_PARENT_VHD_NOT_FOUND
ERROR_VHD_PARENT_VHD_NOT_FOUND means a differencing VHD/VHDX cannot locate the parent disk it depends on. A child disk contains only changed blocks and is not a complete standalone disk.
How to diagnose
- Use
Get-VHDon the child to inspect its recorded parent path. - Find the original matching parent from the same checkpoint or backup chain; a file with the same name is not enough.
- Do not merge or attach the child until the complete parent chain validates.
Get-VHD -Path "D:\VMs\child.avhdx" | Format-List Path,VhdType,ParentPath
