STATUS_VHD_METADATA_READ_FAILURE
STATUS_VHD_METADATA_READ_FAILURE means the provider could not retrieve metadata required for the virtual disk. VHDX has a dedicated metadata region and metadata table; this is different from reading guest files stored in a partition inside the virtual disk.
The status differs from STATUS_VHD_METADATA_WRITE_FAILURE, which occurs while persisting an update, and from STATUS_VHD_METADATA_FULL, which means there is no room for a new metadata item. A metadata-read failure can result from damaged metadata, a failed read path, or an unavailable component required by the provider.
Separate metadata from guest content
- Record the VHDX path, host storage events and the exact API or Hyper-V operation that needed metadata.
- Use a read-only copy and format-aware inspection; do not try to fix the metadata region by altering guest partitions.
- Check whether the failure is reproducible from another healthy host before deciding that the bytes themselves are corrupt.
