STATUS_VHD_INVALID_FILE_SIZE
STATUS_VHD_INVALID_FILE_SIZE means the file length of the virtual-disk container is incompatible with the layout the provider is trying to open. This is a container-boundary problem; it does not by itself identify an error in the guest partition table or filesystem.
The complementary result is STATUS_VHD_INVALID_SIZE, which concerns the virtual capacity stored in the image metadata. A dynamic VHD or VHDX can have a much smaller file length than virtual capacity, but it still must be long enough to contain every required structure and referenced payload block.
Look for truncation and incomplete copies
- Compare the recorded byte length against a source copy, backup manifest or transfer log before attempting repair.
- Check whether a move, upload, sparse-file conversion or storage quota changed the physical extent of the image.
- Keep parents and children together: a valid child file cannot compensate for a missing region in another file in the chain.
