STATUS_VIRTDISK_NOT_VIRTUAL_DISK means the virtual-disk operation reached an object that is not recognized as a supported virtual disk. A raw physical-disk path, an arbitrary data file, a sidecar file, or a truncated image cannot be treated as a VHD merely because a caller expected one.
Do not begin by repairing headers or changing an extension. First establish which layer produced the path and whether the caller intended a VHD or VHDX image, an ISO, a physical disk, or a volume. That distinction decides whether the correct next step is a different API path or an image-integrity investigation.
What to verify
- Capture the object type and the original producer of the path, not only the filename used at the failing call.
- Use
GetVirtualDiskInformationonly after a valid virtual-disk handle exists; it cannot turn an arbitrary file into a VHD. - Compare the result with provider-not-found: this status points to object recognition rather than absence of a provider.
