STATUS_VHD_INVALID_TYPE
The API operation and the VHD type are incompatible
STATUS_VHD_INVALID_TYPE is an operation precondition failure. VHDX describes fixed, dynamic, and differencing virtual disks, but an operation can be meaningful for only some of those types. For example, a differencing chain has parent-child rules that a standalone fixed disk does not have.
The error does not by itself say that the image is damaged. It says that code or management tooling asked the virtual-disk stack to perform an action outside the allowed type/state combination. Determine the actual type from the virtual-disk metadata and consult the specific operation contract before deciding whether conversion, merge, or a different maintenance path is appropriate.
What to verify
- Record the disk type, whether a parent is configured, and the exact operation that returned the status.
- Query information from the opened virtual-disk handle instead of deriving type from the file extension or Hyper-V UI label.
- Preserve the differencing-chain relationship during diagnosis; copying only the child file can hide the original mismatch and create a second failure.
