IMAPI_E_READONLY
IMAPI_E_READONLY means the IMAPI2FS object referenced by the operation cannot be modified. Directory methods such as AddFile and AddTree list this HRESULT when the owning IFileSystemImage is read-only. Microsoft also documents read-only behavior for some imported-image and named-stream operations. The key state is the image object, not NTFS permissions on the source file.
Determine when the image entered a nonmodifiable state
- Record whether the image was imported from disc and whether a result image or result stream has already been created.
- Identify the exact directory or file-item method that attempted to mutate the hierarchy.
- If more changes are required, construct or retain a mutable image object before final image generation instead of retrying the same call.
Changing ACLs on the source directory will not repair an IMAPI object-state error. The source may be fully readable while the in-memory image is intentionally nonmodifiable. Keep object lifetime visible in logs: creation, import, hierarchy changes, and CreateResultImage. That sequence normally reveals whether application code is trying to append content after it has crossed an image-finalization or imported-object boundary.
