STATUS_CLIP_LICENSE_SIGNED_BY_UNKNOWN_SOURCE
The signer is outside the trusted CLiP issuer set
A cryptographically intact signature is not sufficient if the signing identity is not trusted for the relevant licensing policy. This status means Windows could process the signature but could not associate its signer with an accepted CLiP authority. It can result from a license issued for another environment, a malformed enterprise deployment chain, stale trust data, or tampering with issuer metadata.
Adding an arbitrary certificate to a general Windows trust store does not necessarily authorize it for CLiP. License-source authorization is part of the licensing protocol and should be repaired through the Store, servicing, or management system that issued the entitlement.
What to inspect
- Record the issuer, signer identifiers, package identity, and deployment channel.
- Verify that the license was produced for this Store, tenant, product, and Windows edition.
- Update Windows servicing and Store components before reacquiring the entitlement.
- Reject licenses obtained from unofficial export, backup, or activation tools.
