kOSMetaClassInternal
kOSMetaClassInternal is a legacy Libkern/IOKit result for an internal OSMetaClass runtime error. It belongs to the C++ class-registration path used while a kernel extension's classes are being registered, rather than to an application's normal device I/O request path.
XNU's OSMetaClass error logger treats this value as the default internal runtime case. The status therefore should not be presented as proof that a specific hardware device failed. The useful boundary is the kext load or unload phase, the metaclass being processed, and any earlier OSMetaClass log that preserved a more precise result.
How to investigate it
- Record the kext identifier, kernel build, architecture, and class-registration phase.
- Look for a preceding metaclass or OSKext message with a more specific status.
- Do not turn this into a generic device retry; it concerns internal registration bookkeeping.
- For current macOS development, consider whether the functionality should use DriverKit or another user-space extension mechanism instead of a legacy kext.
