kOSKextReturnNotFound
The requested item was not found
kOSKextReturnNotFound is a search result. The OSKext API received a usable lookup request but did not find the target item. It does not say that a bundle failed signature validation or that the request was syntactically invalid.
For code using a load tag, XNU documents this result when the requested loaded kext cannot be located. For a bundle-oriented operation, the target may be absent from the search domain, not discovered by the current boot state, or simply not part of the selected collection.
Distinguish these cases
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
kOSKextReturnNotFound | A valid lookup found no matching item. |
kOSKextReturnInvalidArgument | The lookup request itself is invalid. |
kOSKextReturnNotAKext | A bundle was found but is not a kernel extension. |
What to compare
- The identifier, load tag, or path requested by the caller and the exact lookup domain used by the operation.
- Whether the diagnostic concerns a bundle on disk, a loaded kext, or an entry eligible for a collection rebuild.
- On macOS 11 and later, whether the expectation of immediate load is invalid because third-party kext changes are applied through an AuxKC and restart.
