Motion vectors are coded differentially and interpreted using the active motion-vector range. An illegal code means the bitstream cannot be mapped to a valid horizontal or vertical motion-vector delta.
The useful diagnostic data is the current fcode, prediction candidate and macroblock position. Packet loss or a wrong resync start point can make valid texture bits look like an impossible motion-vector code.
Check these details
- The VOP fcode value and quarter-pel or half-pel mode.
- The predicted motion vector used before decoding the delta.
- Whether the damaged macroblock is after a resync marker or slice boundary.
