What does Windows error code 10044 (WSAESOCKTNOSUPPORT) mean?

Previous Next
WSAEPROTONOSUPPORT WSAEOPNOTSUPP

WSAESOCKTNOSUPPORT

WSAESOCKTNOSUPPORT says that the selected address family does not support the requested socket type. It is most useful when diagnosing a socket or WSASocket failure: the provider may understand the family but not expose the stream, datagram, raw, reliable-message, or other type the application requested.

Do not confuse family, type, and protocol

Address family answers “what kind of addresses are these?”, while socket type describes the communication abstraction. The protocol then identifies a transport compatible with that combination. This code is different from WSAEPROTONOSUPPORT, where a protocol is absent, and from WSAEAFNOSUPPORT, where the supplied address family itself is incompatible with the socket.
