WSAVERNOTSUPPORTED

WSAVERNOTSUPPORTED means that the requested Winsock version cannot be provided by the installed implementation. It is an initialization compatibility error, not a network connection error.

How version negotiation works

WSAStartup receives the requested version and returns the version actually supported in the WSADATA structure. A program must verify that the returned version is acceptable before using Winsock functions that depend on it.

What to check

Request the intended Winsock version with MAKEWORD.
Validate wVersion and wHighVersion instead of assuming that version 2.2 is available.
Do not continue to create sockets after initialization has failed.
